My Family – circa 1960

Grace, Hope & Peace, Friend;

One of the synagogue officials, named Jairus, came, and upon seeing Him, (Jesus) fell at His feet and pleaded with Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death; please come and lay Your hands on her, so that she WILL get well and live.”
Emphasis mine

Mark 5:22-23

Jairus didn’t say, “Come and touch her so she MIGHT get well.” Was he being presumptuous? No! He knew Jesus was capable of healing with a single touch! But Mark continues his account with an interesting interruption! As Jesus and Jairus headed over to Jairus’ home, followed by a multitude, a woman who had been sick for twelve years, secretly touched Jesus’ cloak and was instantly healed! Jesus drew attention to her healing by asking “Who touched me?” And He told her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace and be cured of your disease.” (Mark 5:24-34)

It was not a coincidence that this happened as they were headed to Jairus’ home because right then, messengers came and said to Jairus, “Your daughter has died; why bother the Teacher further?” (Mark 5:35)

But Jesus, overhearing what was being spoken, said to the synagogue official, “Do not be afraid, only believe.”

Mark 5:36

Do we have faith like that? Faith to believe even after things don’t work out the way we anticipated. The young girl died, yet Jesus still told Jairus to ‘believe.’ Jesus told us that whoever believes in Him has everlasting life! (John 3:16) And He said to Martha, “I am the resurrection and the life; the one who believes in Me will live, even if he dies.” (John 11:25) When we ask Jesus to ‘touch’ our children, do we believe He WILL?

They continued on to Jairus’ home and Jesus raised her back to this life.

This account was written as much for our sake as for Jairus’! A literal translation of Jairus’ request is, “Please come and lay Your hands on her, so that she will be ‘saved’ and live.” Jairus was blessed to see his daughter raised back to this life – so was Martha – but even if we don’t see the results we anticipated, Jesus is sovereign, and He answers our prayers. “Only believe.

HaElohim that answereth – God who answers – give me faith to believe even when Your answers are not what I anticipated.

God has heard; He has given attention to the sound of my prayer.

Psalm 66:19

Only believe,
